Useful Interior Decorating Tips

We spend a lot of time in our homes. We sleep, eat, prepare to face the day and bond with our families in them. We celebrate special events and comfort each other during tough times. With all that goes on in a house, it is no wonder that we are so interested in interior decorating. We want to create a comfortable and attractive backdrop for our day to day lives. However, with all of the styles and themes to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out the right look for your home. Try a few of these interior decorating tips to help you create a beautiful haven for your family.

Begin any decorating project by doing some research. Pull out magazines and home décor books and watch a few shows. As you see something that appeals to you, note it down. After you’ve spent a few hours looking at all the different materials, you’ll begin to notice similarities, such as the fact that five of your favorite photos have an Americana theme or that you really liked seven different rooms with a fireplace that had painted bricks. These trends will help you realize which decorating style is right for you and will provide a guide for your next project.

Avoid having more than one theme in a room. A French country theme is wonderful in a kitchen. A Tuscan style kitchen is also fabulous. A Tuscan/French kitchen will end up being a bit disjointed and confusing. A living room decorated in a chic tropic theme that also has country Victorian features will seem cluttered and overwhelming. If you decide to change a room’s theme, simply pack up all the accessories from the old theme, including that wonderful French country rooster print, and store them away until you want to change it back.

Next, remember that less is more. It can be hard to resist that lovely lighthouse themed accessory that would be perfect in your bedroom that is decorated in a nautical style or that great cowboy statue for your living room. However, if you already have quite a few accessories in the space, you really shouldn’t keep adding more pieces. If you find something you like more than pieces that are already in the room, consider removing one of the current pieces and replacing it with the new accessory instead of simply adding your new find to the space.

Finally, make sure you decorate to please yourself. Sure, those beautifully decorated magazine layouts are breathtaking. Sure, everyone always says to remember resale value before you choose a paint color. However, you can always whip out that off white paint and have a painting party before you sell your home, so why not go for the red dining room of your dreams or the sunny yellow kitchen just like the one grandma had?
