Rustic Home Decor

If you enjoy the relaxed feel of a mountain cabin retreat, you’re probably a big fan of rustic home décor. A rustic decorating style has a distinctive primitive feel to it that immediately makes people think of country life, mountain hunting cabins and simpler times.

People who don’t live in a mountain cabin may be hesitant to use rustic interior décor ideas in their homes. However, this cozy and comfortable decorating style doesn’t need to be relegated to the vacation home. The key to using this style in any home is to be sure you don’t overdo it. For example, if you have a modern town home, an outhouse style door would be a bit out of place in place of your bathroom’s traditional door. However, a nice rustic end table would fit right in with your pine futon sofa.

Once you’ve added a fresh coat of paint to the walls, it is time to think about the furniture and accessories. There are several ways to begin decorating the room, but one great spot to start is the floor. People who have hardwoods or natural stone tile floors have the perfect base for a rustic room already in place. However, if you have wall to wall carpet that you don’t want to take up and it is in a neutral shade, you can still add some excitement by adding a big area rug with a rustic feel. Once you have decided on a floor covering, you have your inspiration piece in place. Any items you buy for the room should match your rug’s colors.

Next, you should begin to choose your furnishings. While it may be tempting to bring home only rustic pieces, it is a smart idea to mix and match. One or two pieces of twig furniture are the perfect way to give any room the feel of a cabin retreat, but ten pieces of twig furniture in the room look a bit overwhelming. Consider using a leather couch with a twig coffee table or a lovely pine desk with a twig chair.

After the furniture is in place, it is time to add accessories. For most people, this is the best part of any decorating project. There are so many great photos, pillows, candles and other objects with a rustic interior decorating theme. However, make sure you don’t go overboard with your rustic cabin decorating ideas! A few lovely accent pieces tie all the different elements of the room together.
