Unless you belong in the Forbes list with all your home accessories custom-made just for you, then it’s pretty safe for me to assume that somewhere lurking around your house is an item you’d rather live without. It could be that treadmill (reminding you yet again of your weight issues), or an awkwardly situated water heater that doesn’t capture your the overall feel of your home. In fact, it’s a plain old pain in the eyes!

Some people think the perfect screening tool would be, yes, a screen! Literally! But why settle for that when you can add some more artistic touches such as placing nice shots of your friends and family. This way you won’t have to be reminded that you’re keeping something awful behind that screen when you’re staring at the wonderful smiles of the people you love! One additional feature of some screens is that they come with shelves. So instead of pictures, you can opt to place vases and colorful jars on the shelves. If you are planning to screen a relatively small area, why not buy a CD stand? This works best if you fill it up completely with CD’s and DVDs so that the other side won’t be visible at all. If you don’t have enough CD’s, now is a perfect time to update your collection!

Even if screens happen to be the most effective means to conceal less attractive home items, this comes with a price. And it’s not by any chance a cheap one. So before swiping that credit card, wait it out for a week or two, who knows when the store might have a big sale? If you’re running out of patience, then you can do one by yourself. It’s not that hard once you have the materials you need. One procedure involves looking for three doors that are of similar size. Then all you have to do is to put hinges to connect them together, and you have an instant screen! All for no cost at all! If you chanced upon doors that have windows then you can place some pictures or clippings of your favorite articles, poems or quotes on it. Another alternative would be those shutter doors you can purchase almost anywhere. It follows the same basic idea of putting the hinges together but with shutters you can hook them up on the ceiling for that floating effect. Windows have the same potential too. What are you waiting for go ahead and scour your basement right now to see what you can find.

Another wonderful option would be the use of fabrics to camouflage certain aspects of your home. With this you can experiment with the multitude of colors, patterns and textures depending on the theme of your space! Want a posh display? How about using a fabric that has interesting perpendicular stripes and a curtain rod made of steel? It’s attention-grabbing enough and that hideous item would have to stay hidden! No need to splurge though. If you have available quilts or antique items you may use these to get that vintage look! Also, you don’t want to buy a whole 2 yards of fabric, you can opt for remnant fabric that are way cheaper. Then with a little imagination, and lots of thread, sew these pieces of fabric together to have that abstract feel.

One more tip, you should make sure your screen actually blends well with the theme of your room, otherwise a bright pink curtain in a blue room would have your friends thinking up a game of “What’s behind curtain number one?”
